Smart Marketing

Knowing What to Outsource and When to Take Back Control

What does smart marketing really mean for small business owners, especially when it comes to knowing what to outsource and when to take back control?

Running your own business is incredibly rewarding. Let’s face it, though. It’s also a constant juggle. As solopreneurs and small business owners, we wear all the hats: strategist, creator, admin, bookkeeper, salesperson, and of course, marketer. And all of that happens before we even begin doing the work we’re actually paid for.

Over time, I’ve come to learn that smart marketing isn’t about doing everything yourself. It’s about knowing when to let go, when to reassess, and when to reclaim your voice. What I outsourced last year doesn’t serve me the same way this year. Business needs evolve, and so should your strategy.

Reclaiming My Marketing Voice

This year, I made the decision to bring my marketing back in-house. Not because something was broken, but because something felt off. I’ve worked with brilliant people, and if you follow my pages, you probably didn’t even notice someone else was managing them. But I did. And for me, that mattered.

The content was good, but it didn’t always sound like me. As someone who champions authenticity and helps others find their voice through public speaking and video, I couldn’t ignore that misalignment. I needed my voice back. So, I took back control of my marketing and instead outsourced my IT support to the amazing team at Flex IT. Shoutout to Geoff and the team. You’ve been incredible.

Choosing What to Prioritise

Of course, that shift came with a trade-off. My content rhythm slipped a little. I got busy with clients, coaching, speaking, and running workshops. But interestingly, most people didn’t notice.

Why?

Because over the years, I’ve built a network and brand that continues to work even when I step back. My audience shares my content, tags me, mentions my name, and recommends me. That’s not a lucky accident. That’s smart marketing. It’s the result of years spent delivering value, building trust, and showing up as myself.

Confidence Fuels Connection

This is exactly why public speaking and camera confidence matter so much. When you present yourself with clarity and authenticity, whether in a video, on stage, or at a networking event, people remember you. They connect with you. And they share your name in rooms you haven’t even entered.

Helping others build that kind of confidence is a huge part of my work. It’s not about being polished or perfect. It’s about showing up with purpose and presence. That kind of visibility creates real, lasting connections, and those are what fuel business growth.

Give Yourself Permission

Here’s your reminder: you don’t have to do it all, and you certainly don’t have to do it perfectly. Some weeks your Instagram might be quiet. You might miss a post. That’s okay.

The next time someone asks, “Can I share this photo or tag you in a post?” just say yes. Let your community advocate for you. Let your clients sing your praises. That’s smart marketing too.

It’s About Alignment, Not Perfection

Smart marketing is strategic. It’s also intuitive. It’s about tuning in to what your business needs right now. That might mean outsourcing your social media. Or it might mean taking it back. It could mean investing in content creation or letting your network carry your message while you focus elsewhere.

For me this year, it meant:

  • Reclaiming my voice in my content
  • Focusing more on coaching and speaking
  • Letting go of the IT stress by outsourcing to experts
Let Smart Marketing Lead the Way

Ultimately, smart marketing is about intentional choices. It’s not just a list of tasks or tools—it’s the ability to zoom out, see the bigger picture, and decide where your energy is best spent.

Outsourcing isn’t failure—it’s freedom. It gives you space to grow, to innovate, and to show up where you’re needed most. And taking back control doesn’t mean you’re going backwards. Sometimes, it’s exactly what your business needs to evolve.

This year, my smartest move wasn’t doing more. It was doing what mattered most—realigning my voice, re-establishing presence, and surrounding myself with trusted experts like Flex IT to support me behind the scenes.

So ask yourself:

    • Where does your voice make the biggest impact?
    • What could you release—or reclaim—to make your marketing work harder, not louder?

That’s the heart of smart marketing. Knowing when to outsource, when to take back control, and always making decisions that keep you aligned, authentic, and moving forward.
